How To Get Around Cairo
Cairo is a very busy and chaotic city, with heavy traffic and challenging road conditions. Therefore, I do not recommend driving yourself unless you have experience driving in Egypt.
Here are some tips on how to get around Cairo as a tourist.
Uber in Cairo
Using Uber in Cairo is the best choice. You can book your ride through the app, see the estimated fare, and know where you will be picked up and dropped off and it is safe.
Uber is widely used in Cairo by both locals and tourists.
Taxi in Cairo
Taxis are also widely used in Cairo. However, I find them less convenient for tourists because not all taxi drivers speak English, and they may try to charge you more than the usual price.
You usually need to agree on the price before you travel, and even if you haggle, a taxi will often cost you more than Uber.
For this reason, many visitors prefer using ride-hailing apps, where the fare and destination are arranged through the app.
Public transportation in Cairo
Public transportation in Cairo is very cheap, so it can be a good option if you are traveling on a tight budget.
There is a metro system and a network of buses. However, public transportation can be extremely busy, so don’t expect to travel in complete comfort.
You may feel like a sardine during busy periods. For that reason, I would choose another option when possible, especially if you are carrying luggage or traveling during rush hour.

If you are both foreigners, you should generally be fine, but it is always best to double-check with the hotel before booking.
If one of you is Egyptian, the situation can be different. In my experience, we have always been asked for a marriage certificate when checking into hotels in Egypt. However, this can vary between hotels, so I recommend checking with your hotel in advance.
What is the best part of Cairo?
That really depends on what you are looking for.
If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing around central Cairo, staying in the city center can be convenient. If you prefer luxury and modern resort-style hotels closer to the airport, New Cairo may be a better option.
If you want to stay close to the Giza Pyramids and the Grand Egyptian Museum, staying in the Giza area can make it easier to reach these attractions.
Is 4 nights in Cairo enough?
Yes, four nights can be enough if you want to see the Pyramids, visit the main historical sights, explore the bazaar, and experience some of Cairo’s highlights.
