How To Get Around Cairo

Cairo is a very busy and chaotic city with a lot of traffic jams and almost no rules on the roads. Therefore, I do not recommend driving yourself unless you have experience driving in Egypt. Here are some tips on how to get around Cairo as a tourist.

Uber in Cairo

Using Uber in Cairo is the best choice. You will book it through the application, you know how much you will pay, where you will get off and it is safe. Uber is very well used in Cairo by locals and tourists. You can read more about Uber in Egypt here.

Taxi in Cairo

Taxis are also widely used in Cairo, however, they are better for local people than for tourists. Not all taxi drivers speak English and many of them will try to get more money from you than is necessary. You will have to haggle the price before you go and it will still cost you more than Uber. Moreover, taxis in Cairo are not as new, clean, and safe as Uber.

Public transportation in Cairo

Public transportation in Cairo is very cheap. Therefore if you are on a very tight budget, you may use it. There is a metro or bus. However, public transportation is very busy, so don’t expect to travel in comfort.

You may feel like a sardine. So I don’t recommend using public transportation unless you really have to.

That really depends on what are you looking for. If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing around the city, then downtown is the best area for you. In case you prefer luxury and modern resorts closer to the airport, then New Cairo is the best.

If you want a view of the Giza Pyramids, then stay in Giza Governorate, but choose more expensive well-known hotels as the areas are not very safe, especially in the evening.

Is 4 nights in Cairo enough?

Yes, if you want to see the pyramids, see the main historical sights, and do some shopping in the bazaar, then 4 nights are just the right time to stay in Cairo.
